Awning Life Span

Here is a question that I may get a myriad of answers….

How long does an awning fabric last, given if:

I use trailer at least once per month for 3-4 days with a total number of trips to about 12 per year.
Most of the use is in Kentucky.
I extend the awning for the whole visit and retract when leaving.

Use the awning all week while down in Florida sun once a year.

I perform an annual maintenance by using a spray and drying in the sun to rid of mildew.

At the sign of bad weather and/or high winds the awning is retracted.

Based on this information what have you experienced?
  • I have a 1994 model camper trailer and the original awning is still in fine shape. That makes 20 or so years. Only one small pinhole and a bit of packaging tape fixed that right up about 10 years ago. You usage may vary.
  • I replaced my vinyl awning material last year when it was seven years old. The sun had gotten to the top of the rolled up material and it failed. I keep the awning covered with plastic drain pipe now.
  • IMHO, Vinyl has about one half the life span of quality cloth.
