awning/slide out topper repair

Can I successfully shorten the slide topper to remove the weathered section? There is plenty rolled up and unused to allow shortening at least a foot.

  • It might work if you are willing to be inventive.

The first obstacle is the attachment point where the slide topper fabric meets the edge rail next to the roof. The fabric has a cord embedded in it and it slides into the groove. If you shorten the fabric you loose the cord. You will need to find a new way to secure the fabric into the groove.

I want to caution you that there may not be a much extra fabric on the roller as you think. As it deploys the circumference of the roller gets smaller as it has less fabric on it per turn. Think of a roll of paper towel. When new, each turn of the roll dispenses 3 or 4 sheets but near the end a single turn of the roll dispenses only one sheet.

Anyhow, it's a great idea but implementing it requires some head scratching
