The first obstacle is the attachment point where the slide topper fabric meets the edge rail next to the roof. The fabric has a cord embedded in it and it slides into the groove. If you shorten the fabric you loose the cord. You will need to find a new way to secure the fabric into the groove.
I want to caution you that there may not be a much extra fabric on the roller as you think. As it deploys the circumference of the roller gets smaller as it has less fabric on it per turn. Think of a roll of paper towel. When new, each turn of the roll dispenses 3 or 4 sheets but near the end a single turn of the roll dispenses only one sheet.
