Backing up with tow vehicle

Trying to get a feel for first time towing. Will a car or a small truck back up like a traier would? When steering is unlocked do the front wheels turn and cause a problem when backing? Would you ever have second person get into tow vehicle to help steer when backing, say dead end street or tight turn around? thanks.

  • I have backed up 2 or 3 feet at a gas pump. My toad was perfectly inline with my motorhome.

I agree, the best advice is, don't do it.

  • You can roll back wards down a hill. I have done it several times over the years. I agree you can not push the toad backwards or the tires will turn and lock.
  • No - No Way!
The castering action that allows the toad wheels to turn and follow the Tow Vehicle will instantly slam the front wheels to full lock one way or the other after a VERY short distance in reverse.
The only way to reverse with a toad is to disconnect it and reconnect once you have maneuvered.
  • Best to disconnect. I also tried it with my toad when we had a class A.
  • I have found it best to disconnect the towed vehicle, turn both around, and reconnect.
I tried backing my Jeep ONCE on the tow bar. It moved about 5 feet straight back, then the front wheels SLAMMED over against the stops in a full left turn! Luckily, that was just barely enough that I could get the truck by the cars that had me blocked.
Some will say they have done it, with no trouble. That's fine. I tried it, and failed. I will NOT try it again.
    Disconnect, turn around, reconnect.
Better yet, pay attention and don't get into places where it becomes necessary. In all my years of towing a vehicle, it has only happened to me once, and that was due to other people parking in my way.
As for trying to hold the steering wheel, I have read of at least one incident where somebody tried that, and wound up with a broken wrist!
  • You never try to back up a toad that's 4 down or you will jack knife, damage tow bar assembly, or damage base plates. Even with a tow dolly backing up is near impossible. If you get in a situation that you can not get out without backing disconnect the toad! Always be smart and safe than stuck with damage!
