Backing

With a little practice you can back anything!

Backing
  • I run a heavy haul transportation company. These trailers are common in our field. You have a truck, "jeep" (the short trailer hitched to the truck), the lowboy trailer with a "stinger" on the back. The stinger has a pivot point on it, but when backing, they lock it straight with a hydraulic or manual pin. In essence, the whole rig pivots like pulling two trailers. Thus, to get it to go right, you steer right. Go left, steer left. Because it is a long trailer and the short jeep is up front, it's not as hard as you would think to an experience driver. Especially since he started with it straight and all he had to do was to keep it straight.
  • What makes it different is multiple axles with at least one steerable axle on the trailer. Backing a two axle trailer with one steerable axle used to drive me nuts on the farm.

I would love to see some on here try to back a 100+ ft heavy combo with a Kenworth. Based on what I see at the campground that excavator would be in the lake, the clutch would be on fire, the ferry would have a new found dent, and the husband and wife would be yelling at each other about who's fault it is lol.
  • Anybody on here that's ever backed their camper into a campsite could do what he did in that video. The longer the easier.
  • What you don't see in the video is my wife directing him....
    Works for me anyway.
  • I can't hardly fathom the price it cost to transport that beast. And then the cost to "ship" it (literally)!

So why are we so amazed that the ancients could transport gigantic stones to make pyramids in Egypt?
  • I think it would be easier to back something long like that than something short. I had a 4-horse trailer I had no trouble backing, but my little 13 foot Burro fiberglass trailer could be difficult.
