Wandering, if that contract was from 9 years ago it was done with a 2G or Brand new 3G phone. Appalachia region and that timeframe means it could have been with Alltel, Nextel, or one of the still existing companies. Also of note US Cellular is popular in Va, WVa, and some parts of Ky, so it could be with them.
If you dont know who its with because you have no monthly bill, try removing the battery cover and see if there is a label showing carrier or at least phone manufacturer. If you have to remove the battery obviously the phone will shut down but get as much info as possible. And then replace the battery and restart the phone. Many phone model numbers will tell you what provider it was built to work with.
Whether the phone works with CDMA or GSM can also help figure out what you have.
