Base plate pulled off

Coming out of the movie theater today we spotted a MH stopped with all the towing gear on the ground behind it and no car in sight. We took the man back a couple of blocks and he found his toad, it had gone straight when he had taken a left turn - jumped a curb and lightly hit a chain link fence. We then took the wife to the car also.

The base plate pulled off the vehicle -

I told them about a local KOA and about an excellent hitch place both within miles of where he was

Lesson learned for me check you base plate and make sure it is solidly attached to the car

I wish them well

  • I believe that recently I read something on this Forum about using a safety cable between the base plate and the vehicle frame for situations such as this. If I recall correctly it was on a GM SUV where the baseplate pulled right off the front of the SUV and went through an intersection into a gas station.

This is not an event that happens very often, but I have heard of a few this has happened too. Interesting to know what kind of brackets and tow bar was being used.

the base plate looked like a piece of angle iron that was still connected to what could have been a blue ox tow bar- the bar did not fail the base plate pulled off the late model GM SUV

  • Oh, wow. I, too, am glad no one was hurt. Imagine tooling along the freeway at 70 when you notice the toad ploughing through oncoming traffic!
  • Wow! How much would that suck?!

Glad no one was injured. That could have been so much worse.

Yeah, it would be interesting to know what kind of baseplate and whether it was a self-install or "professional".

Did you notice make/model of the car, and brand of base plate?
