Ha ! Had not even considered ice -fishing...not an'
issue in my parcel of Arizona. I did see, on the Tele,
a gent that hauled a portable "fishin'-cabin" out on
to the ice...complete with recliner, t.v. , heater,
beverages, and bed. Drilled a hole right in the "living
room" floor and fished ! Even had a bag a Cheetos for
snackin'. How the heck do they calculate if the ice can
support them...and how do they tell when it's time to
head for shore ??? Obviously, by your post..some get it
wrong...not sure I'd be comfortable sleeping out there...
unless I had a wet suit and life-preserver. Ice fishing
would probably qualify as a whole separate enforcement
section under existing Stupid Motorist laws. Thanks for
the chuckle.

Fishing shanties are very common around here in the winter. Many are just canvas tents without a floor, but a lot are actually small, one room cabins, complete with a bunk bed, porta-potti, heater, and all the other comforts of home. By law, they have to have the owners name on them, and have to be removed from the ice by a specific date. The bigger problem are the guys who drive their cars, trucks, and snowmobiles out there before the ice gets thick enough, or in the spring when it's beginning to break up. Of course, they all claim to be "experts" at determining whether the ice is safe or not, but then the wind shifts, or the current changes a bit, and then these "experts" are seen heading downstream on an ice floe, waiting to be rescued. The Coast Guard won't take their equipment, so next thing you know they're trying to SUE the Coast Guard for THEIR OWN stupidity! And to top it off, instead of hiding their faces and names from the inevitable news crew that shows up, they embarrass themselves further by giving interviews about their "harrowing experience" and the Coast Guard's "failure to save their gear". The Coast Guard should demand a credit card from them before they even bring them aboard the boat or helicopter!
