When be bought our house in NE TN, that has the Cherokee National Forest about 40' from our back door, we didn't think about bears. The weekend after our offer was accepted we saw a news report of a state campgrounds being closed because of bear problems. Out of curiosity we looked on a map to see where it was. Turned out to be a little over 5 miles from the soon to be our house. Looked further and discovered this part of the National Forest is a bear preserve.
The first week or so after we moved in I was on high alert every time I went outside. Was almost a year before I saw my first bear. I've seen in person one other bear and we pick them up on the trail cam wandering around sometimes, mostly in the middle of the night. We try to make a bit of noise when we go outside but I pretty much forget that there are bears around. Does make friends a bit nervous when they visit. We exchange bear sitings with neighbors but no one is very concerned. We do keep the garbage inside the garage.
