He probably got lost looking for a Mercedes dealership to work on his Sprinter. If only he'd listened to us and bought a Ford.... :B

Hiked alone? No GPS? Hike plan? He should pay for the expenses to find him not we the taxpayers. And he should be banned from the parks as he is a search looking for a place to happen..

I am waiting for the "rest of the story" to hear if he relied on a GPS... ;)

I agree, AZ. Foolish but we pay for his foolishness.

A phone with a GPS or a dedicated GPS with dead batteries are as good as a stone, on the other hand a compass and a good map and knowing how to use them is being prepared.

There are to many city folks that think that going out in the wilderness is as good as going to the city park, when I lived in Sweden at my uncles out in the country we had a pension and folks from the city would come up to breathe the mountain air so to speak, I was part of the search and rescue, we had maps of the different trails for our guests to have and marked the trails with ribbons made from colorful plastic, white, red, yellow, pink, blue never with brown or green to easy to not be seen by someone half panicked and stressed, we normally assisted with searches from the hotel a couple of kilometers up the road, they were always loosing folks from the cities.

I am glad that they found him alive, it is sad when it turns into a recovery, specially small children and mom.

I saw nothing in the article indicating he was lost. What I did see though, was "Chow sustained minor injuries...". If one of those minor injuries was a wrenched knee or badly twisted ankle, for instance, a compass makes a lousy crutch. ;)

I always hike with a small backpack that has food, water, dry clothing, first aid kit, two knives, two flashlights, two means of purifying water, emergency bivy sack, and miscellaneous other gear. Never leave the trail head without it.

Me and my nephew were hiking in midle of summer, in Tatra mountains in Czech republic
When a suden change in weather brought a snowstorm and kept coming down for two days nonstop..
This was high altitude and about 2 hours walk from nearest shelter cabin,we had enough food and drink so no biggie,but then our cheap tent got pile of snow on and started leaking,so we packed up and walked in our summer clothes to the shelter,,made it safely,no gps or cell phones back in those days,when you have to rely only on your mind and muscles you tend to get things done
