Bent Hitch pin

I have been on 3 trips in my travel trailer. I have bent 2 hitch pins. Does anyone know the cause? It is possible that my tongue weight is too much or that I'm not installing my WD hitch porperly? I have read a few articles where a few others have had this problem.
  • I think I may have figured it out. I bought a regular pin and not a locking pin. It didn't bend. But I think I may have figured it out. While hooking up my WDH I think I may have been not hooking the chain links equal on both sides. I think on the left side I was leaving 2 links and on the right side 3 links. Seems like that would make the weight not equal on both sides.
  • Is there a chance you can post a picture of your shank and the bent pin?

Do you have a 5/8" pin or a 1/2" pin?

If the hitch shank fits and is made properly in the receiver and you have a 5/8" pin, you do not have enough truck to bend that pin when pulling or by loaded tongue weight.

Something is not right in the setup or the parts. If we can see what you are up agaisnt we can possible give better answers to what is wrong.

    Hope this helps

  • I got one I don't use anymore. eazlift, this one has been welded into position and has a 10k rating. It weighs about 65lbs. sounds like yours is not the right weight rating.
  • Do you have a 2" receiver or the 2 1/2" receiver with the reducer?
  • Is your WDH shank a solid square bar or is it shaped like an I-beam?

I recall a recent thread on here where somebody had a similar problem... The shank looked similar to this one:
but did not have the reinforcement where the hitch pin went through, so the drawbar was loading the center of the pin only, not placing the load at the edges of the pin. The pin is VERy strong in double-shear like a traditional shank puts it in, but weakest in bending which is what was happening to that other person.

If your shank looks similar to the one I posted, but doesn't have the casting reinforced out to the edges, that could be the problem.
