I can't believe any of this stuff really works. How can the company's make money if they are not charging you money in some way. There is always a catch out there somewhere that is going to cost you money, or at best you will come out even.
I use cash. A lot of places give a discount for cash. Most places will give you the same cash discount if you write them out a check. I have my checking account at the same home town small bank that I have been banking at for 40 years. It's free checking.
You do know that the merchants pay a fee to the card issuer/processor for each transaction, right?
I've yet to see a cash discount that equals the 5% PenFed Visa cash fuel rebate I've been getting since 2008. If there's a catch, I haven't seen it yet. They did change the rules awhile back for the cash rewards card though, requiring having one of several other accounts with them to retain the 5% level. Just sticking $25 in an interest bearing Money Market Savings Account took care of that qualification. Our PenFed Visa rebates average about $50/month, making it about $3000 we've saved over the past 5 years by using the card.
