I'm another one that just uses regular canned food. Forget that stupid date on the side. If the can is still sealed and not bulged out it's fine.
I do replace them after a few years though just because.
( Oh, and you have to keep them from freezing. I had a can of green beans I forgot in the camper over winter once. I ate them the next year and it didn't kill me but, it was like eating baby food. They were all mushy. )
