In a short term disater, you will be seperated from your disaster cache in short order. (By weather, thieves, fire, water, etc) In a long term disaster, you will still starve, just a month later than everyone else.
EDIT. In the US, people don't starve during a disaster. Disease, looters and exposure will get you first.
