  • I tow a Manx dune buggy, it is only about 1,500 pounds, no top, and great in good weather, sand, and small streams! Wonderful for Quartzsite, you can hardly know it is behind the motorhome, no braking system needed.

For rainy weather, and to hold a family of 5, the 2007 Ford Edge is great, A/C, heater, and such. It is 4,200 pounds, and heavier than most want to tow. I also looked at the 7 passenger Ford Taurus X, only made for 2008, it looks like a extended Edge, with the same transmission, front WD or awd.

I also had a then new 1999 Honda CRV, and it towed great too. Seats where a little to thin in 99, but much better in later years.

I installed brake control on the Edge and Honda CRV.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • If four wheel drive with 2 speed transfer case incorporating a NEUTRAL position, probably. Check the Owners Manual to verify.
If two wheel drive, manual or automatic, probably not. Again, check the Owners Manual to verify.
  • I was a little vague on the question, we are needing to tow a small truck; i.e. Nissan Frontier or small Toyota. Does anyone have experience with any of the small trucks and whether or not an automatic transmission can be safely towed?
  • You need to give us more information. Do you like doing some off pavement driving, high ground clearance, or is this a grocery hauler vehicle? Otherwise the answers you will get are geared to our uses not yours.
  • What do YOU want from a toad? I really like my Saturn Vue as a toad, but I find it is to small when I want to take friends along touring. I am now thinking of either making my Toyota Sienna van towable (lube pump), or purchasing a Ford Flex. The new diesel should handle either nicely. I spoke with a fellow at a Rally who tows his Smart Car. He loves it. Also this weekend I saw a diesel pusher towing a large pickup with a flat bed instead of the usual rear, and an off-road vehicle on the back of the pickup. My daughter and family tow their Jeep, and love the off road travel offered by the Rubicon. So really, what would make you happy?
  • If you want to get off of the road a little, get a Wrangler Jeep. Light and easy to tow.

  • I've been towing a 2003 Honda CRV for about 9 years using a Ready Brute Elite towbar/braking system. I've been quite happy with the combination. I also use a heavy mat called a "Protect-a-Tow" that runs from the bumper of the MH to the bumper of the Toad. In addition to protecting against rocks, it also increases MPG due to lower drag.

We towed our type 1 VW for 20 years, never a problem, put in neutral and go. It requires a special wire harness.

We now have a Jeep Wrangler, and love it.
