Best way to clean an awning.

Hey fellow RV'ers. I would like to clean the black stuff off my awning and before I attempt it I thought I would check with you all what chemicals are best for removing the stuff. It's not terrible but want to be proactive before it gets to bad.

Just cleaned the vinyl awning on ours. Mixed up a solution of soapy water with bleach, put it into a 1 gallon sprayer from Home Depot ($9). Soaked the top side, then underneath. It was then rolled up for about 20 minutes, which stops the solution from drying out, or completely dripping off.

It was then opened, and both side sprayed with water. Only a couple of little spots needed touch up with the RV brush. Looks very good for an almost 9 year old awning.

X2- hands down, the most effective way to clean an awning. No scrubbing and no getting covered with soap, chemicals and no expensive cleaners to buy.
  • Warm soapy water and a little bleach.......roll up, have a beer or two, unroll......spray off with water....let dry and your good to go!
  • Thanks all. I'm assuming it's just a vinyl awning. It's on a 2012 sabre silhouette. It's starting to get a few spots and want to get ahead of the game before it gets real bad.
  • I washed mine with RV awning cleaner and the used Mr. Clean magic eraser on
    it and it looks new.
  • Ya, that Tilex wont hurt the awning but it sure does a number on your duds!
Oh and it's not much fun in your eye's either. :(
  • *Wet the awning completely on both sides with a hose sprayer, then spray Tilex on both sides.
*Roll up awning. Leave for 20 minutes (set timer so you don't lose track of time!).
*Unroll awning and rinse both sides well with hose sprayer.
*Let dry completely before rolling back up. Also rinse side of camper in case any of the Tilex got on it.
*Tip: wear old clothes and a hat in case any Tilex drips on you. Don't ask how I figured this out...
  • "Tilex Mold and Mildew" is the best product I've found.
I don't know why but it works better than other bleach based products I've used but does not hurt the awning material. This stuff even gets out stains that have been in place for years and that other strong cleaners leave behind.
Make sure you wear old clothes and saturate the entire surface with it. Then roll it up for an hour or two and rinse.
You wont believe how well it works!

  • It would depend on who made your awning or what material (if you happen to know) This is what I'd do, mix up a big sudsy bucket of warm water, scrub the top and bottom, then roll it up and let it set for 10 minutes, then unroll it and hose it off and you should be good to go.

The only thing I'm not sure is the cleaner to use, like I said, that would depend on the material of your awning.
