Makes me sad to think that there are people like this in our great country. Scams artists that pray on our emotions and attempt to take advantage of the innocent.
In my career of LE,I have seen and dealt with my share of criminals. One incident in particular, even though it happened many years ago, is still nipping on the surface of my memories.
After arresting a low life for molesting his 14 Y/O step-daughter and while he was in the cage of my cruiser he asks, "May I explain my side of the story?". I always let the prisoners speak for the information they spill is sometimes helpful on their case or another case.
Yes, speak all you want to, I told him. He says, " Hey man, you gotta understand why I did 'this'. I paid for all her clothes, food, toys, medicine so why should I let some punk off the street get the first 'shot' at her?"
Besides being filled with disbelief and anger, I kept my cool and my mouth shut and delivered this low life to the jail cell he belonged in. I have never forgotten how some people pray on others for their own selfish satisfaction.
Your case could have been more unfortunate, but believing in your 'gut' that not all was right with this mechanic saved you hundreds of dollars and personal stress.
I am happy you were not financially compromised and decided to share your story with others. If you helped just one person from becoming a statistic in a likeminded crime, you have done a good deed by sharing.
