Wife and I are in late 60's and have been riding for only the last few years. Best thing we ever did as our health has much improved.
We have folding bikes for convenience, and hybrid bikes for riding longer distance. Did most of the GAP last summer.
Check out Dick's Sporting Goods, they have bikes nearly as good as the bike shops, for a fair price.
