We chose the Townies for two reasons. Besides the previously mentioned crank forward stance, the handlebars are also raised a bit. The net result is that you ride sitting straight upright. It is a lot more comfortable to my lower back than riding bent over on a mountain bike. The cost was about $450/ea, a bit higher than a Huffy but worth the cost for the comfort. Don't get the twist grip shifter as they are too hard for someone with a weaker grip. The dual lever type is much easier.
