Definitely take them shopping. Get them involved in choosing what they like. Showing up with trikes could be a slap in the face, unless they have some physical problems that make a trike necessary.
I ride a Trek Pure. Like the Electra Townie, it's a crank-forward comfort bike. It has some suspension components to soften the ride. The crank-forward design of these bikes make them easier to pedal and easier to mount/dismount. Best of all IMO is that a comfort bike allows for a very upright riding position, which is easier on the back and way more comfy on the butt. Due to rear end pain, I was ready to quit riding until I found the comfort bike.
Mine is a "Sport" and has 21 speeds, but I see that Trek now appears to offer them only in single speed or 7 speed. Other companies may offer this type of bike with sealed rear hubs, which is a convenient feature: no need to let off the pedal pressure when shifting. Electra Townie has a "3i" model with 3 speed internal hub, and a "8i" with 8 speeds.
Another brand/model is the Giant "Suede".
Buy them something uncomfortable and they won't use it. Buy something that's good quality and that they will like, and they could get years of enjoyment out of it.
