There sure is a lot of bias against trikes here. I guess most people think of the upright style trikes with 1-3 speeds that you see rented out at boardwalks, etc.
I've been riding bicycles of some type all my life. About 10 years ago I saw a recumbent bike and fell in love with it. They are faster than similar bikes because they are more aerodynamic. They were actually banned from competition back in the 1930's because they were "toooo fast" (and still are banned).
My wife and I both also ride recumbent trikes. They are a blast to ride. They are good exercise. They are much more comfortable to ride.
We are in our mid 50's and don't "need" to ride trikes, but choose to ride trikes. My wife has a Catrike and I ride a Terratrike.
The main drawback to riding trikes is that we often are unable to get in our intended riding time because of all the great people that stop us to talk about them. We have met a lot of nice people and been able to assist a few that truly need to ride trikes due to various disabilities. We are both always willing to allow others to try out our trikes and encourage others to exercise whether it be on a recumbent or other type of bike.
