I see a few people riding recumbents but IMO they sit so low that they would be harder for people to notice. Also, I would have an issue getting in and out of one, too close to the ground.
As you can see from the responses, there is no single correct answer. Lots of different bikes to look and and TRY.
In my experience recumbents get noticed and I'm given more room by passing motorists than I ever was on an upright bike. They are unique and catch peoples attention vs. just another bike in your peripheral vision. My wife and I also both use flags on our trikes when riding on the streets.
As for being low to the ground, there are numerous options in recumbents. My recumbent bike is a high racer and therefore is not difficult to get on or off.
After I bought my recumbent trike my wife decided she wanted one, but she too thought that they would be hard for her to get on and off, so we set out looking at some of the taller recumbent trikes designed with that in mind. After she test rode the taller trikes as well as several of the lower ones she actually decided on a trike that sits 1 inch lower than mine. She found that it wasn't difficult at all to get in and out of.
For the original poster, your best bet is to take your parents to a shop that carries a variety of bikes and recumbents and let them try them. Let them decide what works for them.
