Black Streaks

What causes black streaks across the roof and accompanying wide spread small spots.
  • doxiemom11,
Go to your local Harley Davidson dealer and purchase S-100. Spray it on wait 3 minutes and wipe off easily. Good on any surface. $15.00 per QT and well worth the money. Just make sure you rinse well or it will leave milky streaks. Bugs on windshield GONE no effort.
  • Black streaks seem to be a mix of dirt, mold/mildew, decaying vegetable matter, and general nastiness. They can be hard to remove from a lot of surfaces, including rubber roofs and fiberglas as well as painted surfaces. Some are never going to come clean.

My nearby RV dealer recommended a product called "Parkay" which is billed as a black streak remover especially for vinyl awnings. It is spray on, wait a couple minutes, and then brush before rinsing, and it seems to work well. But it isn't perfect, in that there are some black deposits it can't get up, either. I've had generally good results with it, however.
  • The black streaks are not random. They seem to follow the seams on the roof. My problem is that the streaks are actually under the rubber. This is a left-over 2016 model and sold to me as 'same as brand new". The dealership tried to clean it last week and it would not come clean with all of their chemicals.

At the time of purchase I was physically unable to look at the roof and told "everything was all cleaned up and ready to go". I didn't notice the roof problem until a few weeks later.
  • I hate black streaks! Someone needs to invent a good cleaner - spray on, rinse off - absolutely no scrubbing.
  • Crud from the gutters overflowing; leaves, etc. Covering the roof helps.
  • Acid rain, (dirt in the air, for example, automobile exhausts, smoke from factories, fires, any kind of pollution going into the air) that settles on your camper, then gets wet with dew (high humidity), and then runs and drips.

Add bird droppings, bug dropping, dirt from trees ... yes ... lots of dirt from stuff falling from trees, and the roof, gutter, and anything making a shelf on the side of the camper (like outside lights, driving lights, door hinges, even trim) will collect all this "dirt". Then as said, dew, rain, moisture, causes that dirt to move and streak. Over time, it get more and more noticeable, until it finally becomes a black streak.

Water dripping off the air conditioner has to go somewhere. It flows over your roof, and drags all that dirt with it too.
