Don't remember the particulars but vaguely remember a post few years back about a campground that had you dump tanks upon arrival.....then gave you NON-FORMALDEHYDE chemicals at check in

Surely someone else can recall that one.......really I read it on here!

It's funny people who say, "just plain water it works for me" , well it doesn't work for everyone. RVs are all made different, some are sealed better then others, etc. etc.. IT's not like people are dreaming the smells.

I've had tank smells from time to time and it's due to the pressure inside the RV. Opening up the drivers window or the kitchen ceiling vent is usually what does it. Cracking the bathroom room window will alleviate most of the smells.

RV360's have worked well to eliminate all smells. If "plain water" or the Geo method doesn't work for you, I'd look at some vent pipe gadgets.

I recommend nothing at all. If you flush properly after each trip you shouldn't need anything. I used to buy into the hype that you had to add stuff to your black tank but quit using anything after extensive reading here. I haven't used anything in three years and have had no problems......I have three words for you flush, flush, flush.

Hey I read it on the internet it has to be true. Most campgrounds,State parks and National parks don't want you to use it.
I don't use any chemicals and don't have a problem.
I have camped where it is hot as southwest Texas and didn't have a problem. I have never had a problem with my black tank building pressure. If you do you need to fix your vent.

RE: the tank sitting a foot below the floor...the tank is sealed. You could set it on your picnic table and it wouldn't smell.

RE: smell when dumping....the sewer is full of grey water, too. Have you ever smelled grey water? It's worse than black.

We've full-timed for 16 years, used only water, and no smells. We've boondocked for up to 12 days at a time....no smells. We run the fan...no smells. We stayed in hot areas....no smells. The seconds it takes to flush...no smells.

All I can say is plain water works for us.

I can't believe how these threads go on and on. Black tank odor is caused by anaerobic bacterial action. Anything that indiscrimately kills bacteria is not worth throwing down the black tank. Something that promotes aerobic bacteria can be beneficial. If you fill your black tank quickly and dump often, water may be all you need. If stuff sits for more than five days the system can benefit from biologically active or promoting (aerobic) treatment. If you have to put something down the black tank let it be water and Happy Camper Organic Holding Tank Treatment.

IF (that has been a few times in 30+ years) I get stink inside my RVs I locate source and FIX it

Couple times is was toilet floor flange (replaced it), sometimes toilet bowl seal (cleaned it or replaced it), one was a toilet that had 'overflow' that went directly to tank (plugged it off) and a couple AAVs that failed to close (Grey stinks also....replaced them) AND then there was having the exhaust fan on blowing OUT which would pull stink up when toilet was flushed.

But that few minutes was no worst then when someone 'went poop' and didn't linger
Besides poop just smells -well natural. Better than CHEMICAL POOP smell

Water provides a great odor barrier......that is why 'P' traps were designed to hold water, why residential toilets have built in 'P' traps.
Water is a 'solvent'---------natural
Water is heavy and will move boulders so and poop/TP will get carried out of holding tank if one allows level to be high enough

I just find 'chemicals' unnecessary... and after ALL the 'pros' for chemicals posted -----STILL find them unnecessary.
