For those that "claim" a perfectly working black tank will never smell, have genetically altered poop. A perfectly working black tank has to vent somewhere, if working perfectly it will vent outside through the vent stack. For those of us that sit outside while camping, if the wind goes the wrong direction it smells. A deodorizer helps with that downwind smell coming from the perfectly working vented black tank.
Thank you. X2!
I have had my days ruined parked next to an RV that emits stank. Add 90 degree weather to that and a black tank filled with sewage starts percolating and WILL smell.
Also those of you that use nothing......
when you flush the toilet there is NO pee trap like at home that keeps water between you and the sewage.
An RV toilet has a straight open pipe directly from the toilet to the tank.
Every time you flush with an untreated tank, that sewage odor and bacteria come right up into your RV.
It's a health issue not just a case of "i use nothing cause I do".
There really is a 'reason' black holding tank chemicals for Marine and RV were produced and have been around for years and years.
I only boondock or go where there is no hookups. I always put between 5 and 10 gallons of water in the black tank at the beginning of a trip or after dumping and continuing a trip. I once tried not using a deodorizer, that lasted one day until I was sitting outside the trailer and prevailing wind stopped and the smell just hung around the trailer.
I've noticed when I dump, the smell does not go directly into the RV but instead out the vent stack and if the RV door is open - back into the RV. If you have a sani-flush or something similar it's even worse as the sani-flush really "stirs" up the mixture before or while you dump. If you use a wand down the toilet, then yes the smell might come up directly into the RV from the toilet. Dumping is just plain stinky. But I really don't want to smell it while sitting outside the RV.
The converse, when taking a dump (or is it leaving a dump); I don't have the bathroom exhaust fan on until after I flush - thus avoiding sucking up black tank fumes into the RV.
Maybe I could talk about how bad my gray tank stinks after a few days of boon docking.
