Black Tank Valve Opening In Transit??

My brother got a new TT last fall. The first time he went out was when Hurricane Sandy hit and we had to evacuate the CG early. After the storm he checked on the camper and noticed the black tank valve was open. Well, he didn't know it was open until he opened the cap on the line. ;-) We figured he was in such a rush to leave that he forgot to close the valve.

Last month he went to connect the sewer line when arrivin at the CG and the same thing happened.

He came back from anothe trip yesterday and noticed this morning that the valve is open.

Now, he's not usually one to forget something like this and he's very competent. With that said, I'm not saying that he definitely closed the valve. I think it's possible he forgot to close it.

There have been many trips this year when the valve didn't open in transit so it's not like you can say it always opens when traveling.

Your thoughts? Have you heard of the valves opening in travel? Do you think he just forgot? He has two gray tanks and the black tank which is new for him so maybe he just closes the two gray tanks because that's what he's used to, only closing two valves. Perhaps the third valve is escping his mind. Lol

  • We have had three different motor homes with three different tank configurations and in thousands upon thousands of trips over just as many years, I can not remember either the black or the gray opening by themselves.

Now, I have had pranksters on two different occassions open the black water valve in campgrounds at night.
  • I've never heard of self-opening black-tank valves before, and don't see a mechanism for how it would occur. I think he's just forgetting to close it. At least that's my theory.
  • I think he is just forgetting the 3rd valve and is a slow learner :B

Have him install a 4th valve on horizontal run just before end cap. Then he only has to remember the one valve........and no more surprises when removing end cap.
