We just look for USFS or BLM roads, explore the road, find an offshoot, then look for a flat site that is suitable. I know there are motor vehicle use maps that you need to know about. Also, we are very careful about trespassing on private property. One night, however, we stayed at a photo location too long waiting for the magic hour. The gov't shutdown was in effect so couldn't stay at the nearby rustic campground so we wandered on a backroad until we found an offshoot then camped. The next morning we woke up on some ranchland but one pickup that drove by just waved. And, we are careful to avoid logging and mineral exploration areas. Those big trucks don't want to stop.
