I treat our clothing with Permethrin that I buy in a 32% solution and dilute to make a 0.5% solution and use a garden sprayer to soak the clothes. I could also use a basin and dip the clothes in. It will last for 50-60 washings at this concentration and cost less than a nickle per garment to treat. It will not damage any type of clothing material, unlike DEET.
The Permethrin keeps ticks, fleas, mosquitoes, gnats, etc. off your clothes so anything covered is protected. For skin I spray on Picaridin which does not have the downsides of DEET and I have learned to rub the area to be sure that I have an even layer of the stuff. Where gnats or no see ums are a problem I mix 50% Picaridin and 50% Skin So Soft for the repellent that I spray on my skin. The Picaridin is for the mosquitoes and Skin So Soft is great for gnats, chiggers, and no see ums.
This is the same approach used by the military to protect service personnel stationed all over the middle east and Africa.
My wife and I started doing this 15 years ago and with our trips to SE Asia and Central America we do not get bitten and we are often in areas with high concentrations of mosquitoes and other biting bugs.
