Brake problems

This is a strange one but I need help. I have a 2005 Raptor toy hauler and I am pulling it with a 2014 dodge dually diesel. The information center on the dash keeps beeping when pulling the trailer and says check trailer brake wiring or trailer disconnected. It comes and goes so you never know when your going to have brakes and my trailer is about 14000 lbs so brakes are important. I got with a friend of mine today and he has same trailer but a 2008. These are fifth wheel trailers. He has an older ford truck with an after market brake controller and I have the built it controller. We hooked his truck to my trailer and pulled it with no problems. Then we hooked my truck to his trailer and pulled it with no problems. Then we hooked my trailer back to my truck and went about 1 mile and the dash information beeped and said brakes disconnected. When it says that the lights and turn signals in the trailer work. I know this is long but I am looking for any help I can get. Thank you for reading.
  • I replaced the plug and that didn't help so then I replaced the entire cord with a sealed plug on the end but no help. Still had the problem. I honestly think I have tried everything. Still trying to find how the brakes are grounded.
  • This is the best forum I have been involved in where so many people try to help me. Kudos to all.
  • My best guess here is that the wire feeding all the brakes with 12 volt from the connector at the truck has a poor connection somewhere. If you look under the RV I am sure you will see wire nuts near each wheel. Check these connections. Looking for and finding the ground connection and cleaning it is critical.
  • Your ground is in the front of the trailer.
I have 3 more thing you can check.
    The safety switch.
The ground on the truck. Not on the batteries but on the towing harness that run from under the hood to the back.
    And all the magnets.
If you have a voltmeter it will help a lot to fix this.
  • If you have not do it, check the connections at each wheel. I had 3 of mine go bad this summer. The wires at each crip connection might be ready to let go. I replaced mine with filled wire nuts for wet conditions.
  • Can you replicate the brake disconnection with the 5th wheel parked? This may be as simple as an intermittent connection.

FWIW, I was pulling hairs a few years back for a similar problem and found that a rock had probably hit the trailer connection wiring bundle under the truck. I had to separate the wire loom to find that a wire had parted inside it's jacket. There was enough stranded wire to make a connection most of the time but truck movement caused a disconnection of the brakes, intermittently.

Good luck, hope you find the problem and it is small.
  • You said that your trailer is good on his truck and your truck works fine with his trailer. Your truck and trailer are both fine. I would look at connector or ground
