broken roof hatches

yesterday's storm here broke the plastic/fiberglass roof hatches with 1 completely breaking off and going airborne. the hatches appear to be the victim of exposure/age (age 5 years). now, can this hatch part be replaced without replacing the whole assembly?

  • Yes they can be replaced. They are easy to do and relatively cheap. There is more than 1 kind so you may want to take it with you to compare. If you have never removed one there are videos out on the web showing how to do it.
  • You can also find many places to order them online if you are sitting somewhere for awhile and don't need them "today".
  • Another vote for MaxAir covers... we have them over all of our vent lids now. Two of our vent lids got hammered by hail in Colorado and that was when we replaced them and added the MaxAir covers over the vent lids. The lids/covers themselves are not hard to replace. As others have stated, take the hinge portion with you when buying a replacement so you know they match.
  • X2 On bringing a hinge piece with you. Even though they all almost look identical, there are 3 common brands and several less common brands and none are interchangeable.
  • Also recommend installing the MaxAir covers as you replace the vent cover...had them on our 5'er and installed them on MH right after purchase.
  • As others have said The Maxxair covers over the vent cover is a great idea to protect them.

This link will help you in identifying the type of vent cover you need to replace yours.

I would also suggest replacing them with the polycarbonate ones with the 5 Year guarantee Like these

This video also may be helpful.

If your talking about the 14 inch square vents, they are very easy and common to replace. Take a piece with the hinge part on, or picture and go to your local RV dealer or Walmart for the replacement.

While you are there pick-up Maxair or similar covers that go over the originals, double the protection plus other advantages.
