I have a bike rack on my 1999 TT. I carry two full size bikes on it. I was told to make sure the bumper is steel and not aluminum. Mine is steel. This could be because of it being older. I did not take the bikes on the Alaska trip this summer.
It's not a matter of steel vs. alum.
The bumpers are so thin and poorly welded that they will either break the poor quality welds or even if that doesn't happen, the thin metal simply tears like paper (like mine did) as the bike rack pulls it downward away from the trailer.
Add the brace like I did will make the bumper strong enough.
