Bushings

Just got some bad news. I took our motorhome in because the tires are wearing on the edges. The tire pressure is correct and the front end is OK. It turns out the all the rear axle bushings are wore out causing the vehicle to dog walk. So now they have to order the parts and it will take two days labor to replace. They told me the bushing killer is, not using the vehicle. They dry rotted from sitting. We have a trip setup for next week to attend the Dream Cruise so I'm hoping they will have it completed in time. Just wanted to let people know what can cause the tires to ware on the edges. All well, it could be worse. Have it break down on the road.

Happy Camping, bye Dennis:(
  • Dennis......None of us are there and can look at what you describe, but having owned two DP's and working on many others, your description doesn't sound plausible. First, bushings, even sitting, will typically last more than ten years. For a rear end to have moved 3", the bushing would have to disintegrate. It would have made noise, been obvious (not sitting in the wheel well properly) and certainly caused some driveshaft issues.

I know that when they communicate a repair/diagnosis, it doesn't always come across correctly when the owner tries to explain it later. Maybe there is something else going on. I have yet to hear of ANY coach needing the repair yours needs at ten years old.

I think I would have them show you that movement (3") and want to see the bushings they remove.

I know you came on here to warn people of potential issues of letting a coach sit and you got bombarded, but your statement and their diagnosis just doesn't make sense. The problem with their repair is that there is no way to verify that it will solve your issue until you put another 5K - 10K miles on new tires to see if they are wearing correctly.

Typically, any coach with a wear issue like yours is aligned using a 4 wheel alignment method, where the front axle is aligned with the rear to make sure they're parallel.

Good luck, but I sure would want to see those bad bushings up close and personal.
  • I guess I'm hoping Freightliner knows what they doing. I know, I'm very upset with what Freightliner is saying what is causing the issue. I don't really know where I can take to get it repaired. We have a couple of other shops in area I have used and was not happy with their work. I asked to see the worn parts once they finish with the repair. I know they can get junk and say this is what they replaced. I hope not.....I have had good service in the past with this shop. I hope it takes care of the tire wear. I know it will take a few thousand mile before I can check.

    Happy Camping, bye Dennis
  • Our rear axle wa outof alignemnt and causing driving problems. They had to remove the welds align the whole rear axle ,to the frame and weld in washers. It handles a lot more like a car now. Been living with it since new and had three alignments before, that did not identify the problem. American Coach fixed that problem in just a short time .or ground to bits on the sway bar.
Front rubber sway bar bushings were "rotted" or ground up.
Couldn't fin urethane bushings or would have had them put in, instead of rubber.

  • We are still waiting on parts. It's good to hear that the repair makes it handle better. It didn't drive funny at all. That's why I thought it just needed a front end alignment because of the goofy tire wear. I'm hoping Freightliner can get it repaired in time for our trip to Dream Cruise. I hate to hear you had the same issue, but I guess it just happens.

  • I picked up our motorhome and they repaired the rear axle bushings and did a four wheel alignment. Drives great but I have a flay spot on the tires. I'll take on this trip but when I get home I'll replace the steer axle tires. What a good brand? I have Goodyears on there now.

    Thanks, Bye Happy Camping.
