I have been using the liquid Calgon. There is no difference from the powder. I have never seen the powder, just the liquid.
After using the GEO method for a year, it has made no difference from just using the usual chemical tank treatments. The black tank sensors still don't work and as most will say - none of the standard in-tank sensors do.
