Campground Directory Advice

At the end of this year, we will be traveling coast to coast, and thereafter will be spending a lot of time in the MH in the eastern U.S. We have a 2011 Woodall's campground. Will there be enough changes from the 2011 Woodall's to get a new directory? I see there is a 2015 Good Sam directory available now. Should we get one of those?

Also the same question as to Next Exit. We have a 2011 edition. Are there enough changes to warrant squandering $13 on a 2014?

Thanks!
  • I would strongly encourage you to go electronic. There are probably at least 5 to 10 Apps and websites that make finding campsite extremely easy compared to leafing through a bound guide book. I suspect once you get used to doing that the book guides for campgrounds would be tossed out real fast.

For example, right now on this netbook I can fire up MS Street & Trips and open a map with nearly every private (paid) campground in the country shown by little yellow dots (my color choice). Or on another map I have every public campground shown the same way. (Or they could be merged into one map).

As we are riding down the road all those campgrounds appear out ahead of us all day.

And S & T is just one of many ways of doing this. I'm sure others have similar and probably better ways of finding campgrounds

At least give it a try. I think you'll love it.
  • I'm not as concerned about reviews as about just locating them, especially in out-of-the-way places.
  • IMHO, you don't need the new editions. All Stays is a good app, it covers private campgrounds, COE, city, county & state. We mostly use Passport America, Don Wright's Free Campgrounds & casinocamper.com. We used PA a lot on the east coast in 2011, they are a little more restrictive but we just worked around it. We found a cg that gave us PA prices on Memorial Day weekend. We got 1/2 price during the week in Gettysburg. We also stay in state cg's when we can. Have a great trip!
  • I use www.rvparkreviews.com

I find because of the reviews from actual RVers who have stayed in the campground you get a clear picture as to what to expect. I especially like the feature on the website where it shows campgrounds/RV Parks located within up to 50 miles away or in nearby cities to where my destination is.
  • Also ... are there many free campgrounds that aren't in the other campground directories, or should they all be in there? The last edition of Guide to Free Campgrounds (Don Wright) seems to be 2011. Is it worthwhile to buy?
