Well said! I'm not interested in going into details of my situation, but it quickly scared me and I left immediately! We have too many in society who do not value life!

It's hard to know about sampling because it depends on what one means by attacks. It's one thing to talk about attacks on all police, but another to talk about attacks on forest service/BLM employees, many of whom have little to do with law enforcement per se.

As one who used to do analysis even with 4 years of data the article presents to small sample to make any conclusions other than random acts with the exception of those specifically pointed out as having an agenda ala PETA, free rangers etc. But...

As a future host I would be very much interested in the environmental contexts of the incidents ie; holiday, trafficking or manufacturing areas, how remote and how often patrolled, historical context between offender and employee. I could go on quite a bit more but again, the sampling as presented is too small and spread out to make any conclusion other than as others have noted - an alarmist article written for reaction rather than to accurately inform.

This was an inflated story. I am a retired LEO that went through 4 riots in LA. I can't believe how this 5 year old inflated story got so much press. Yes I can. People watch and believe these news stories. It scares them and they crave more of it.

Dianne, the article must be coming up very different in your space. For me the mention of firebombing is in the sixth paragraph. I do not agree that "The sensationalism of one encounter should not deter anyone who wants to volunteer or wc." I have left a "volunteer" position because I felt that it was unsafe for me and my loved ones. The working agreement with the Forest Service stated that either party could terminate the arrangement with written notification. I did and listed my reasons for leaving. Never heard from my ranger supervisors. No job is worth putting up with crazies; much less a volunteer position!

The firebombing:
" July 24, 2013

Someone threw a firebomb at BLM campground hosts in the Wildwood Recreation Site near Oregon’s Mount Hood. "Two BLM recreation site hosts ... were performing campsite duties and traveling in a golf cart (when they) heard a loud noise and the sound of shattered glass. They pulled over ... and discovered the remnants of a Molotov cocktail. There was a sock, which was used as a wick, still burning, diesel fuel and a broken Corona glass bottle. (They) realized this device had been thrown at them."

It wasn’t the campground’s first firebomb: "Previously that morning, two other devices were found by a BLM employee on the pavement in the same area. ... These devices were constructed in the same manner as the Molotov cocktails thrown at the campground hosts. ... There is a history of vandalism, trespass, dumping and destruction of vegetation in the wooded area near the incident site.""
