I don't think posts like this are as mush about worrying about the cost as they are trying to be pennywise. Comparing costs is a way to prevent throwing money away needlessly. For many of us, that attitude helps us go out and enjoy more of what life has to offer.
And people prefer to travel differently. When I travel to a city, air or otherwise, I prefer to stay outside the downtown area and get a lower hotel rate and free parking. I enjoy taking their mass transit into the downtown area and don't see it as wasted time. But it is amazing how often I have someone insisting that I pay more for a hotel downtown because it's better. My last trip, I got a hotel for $89 with free parking. It cost me $10 a day for a transit pass. Had I chosen to stay downtown, it would have cost me $140 plus $20 per night for parking. That $60 a day paid for my rental car so I could see the entire region and not be stuck in just where public transit traveled.
For someone else, staying downtown is the only choice. And they are willing to pay for it.
