Camping Etiquette

Well everyone as you can tell by by profile, I seldom post topics, however, I appreciate all the knowledge I have gained from many of you so before I rant, let me start out by saying thank you.

This weekend we were at Ventura Beach RV Resort in Ventura, CA. The park was full. I cannot understand for the life of me why people cannot pick up after their animals when they do their business, and why they let them run free off their leash. We were preparing the RV to leave the park and a lady was walking here two dogs and let them take a poop right behind our space and did not pick it up.

On another note, why do people continue to walk through others spaces?

People need to learn to be more considerate of others.

Thanks for listening.

Picking up after Fido... One campground I frequent has now established a policy.. WE will pick up after your Fido... For a small fee of around 25 dollars a pick. (OUCH)

As to both issues.. You have perhaps heard of something called "Common Courtesy"

Well.. years ago.. Back in the days of of the fictional Matt Dillion (TV/Radio Show Gunsmoke, The radio show starred William Conrad). Well everybody was packing and those who offended... Often ceased to offend, Thus courtesy was common..

But alas, those days are gone, and thus, Common Courtesy, is now rather uncommon.. That said, I've been known to hold a door for someone entering or leaving a building or room or stairwell behind me..
And "Gunsmoke" was pure fiction. The old west was hardly full of people who were polite. The miners consistently killed and stole from rival miners. The cattlemen actively attacked the "sodbusters". They all killed and ran off the Native Indians. The lawmen of the day were often corrupt and many ran their towns and territories like their own private empires. The fact is, the good ole days were rarely that good.
  • We can't take our well behaved, very docile retired Greyhound into lots of locations(down trails, onto beaches etc.), due to the idiot dog owners who feel the rules are for other people. If the rule requires a 6' leash and most do, your 30' expandable leash DOES NOT comply!

I am so sick of Fido, 30' out in front if his owner coming into our site and yapping or worse at our Greyhound who is on her 6' leash bothering no one. These leashes besides being stupid are very dangerous. Google them and you will discover that they are one of the most hazardous consumer products you can buy. Falls due to becoming tangled are common and many have lost fingers that got wrapped in the thin line when fluffy bolted. If the rule says 6' it means exactly that, compliance is not based upon when you happen to feel like it.

    OK, rant off for now.
  • Wow! Thanks to all of you that have weighed in on this topic. I like the idea of offering them a bag to pick it up. These issues make me sore because I see it so much more lately. These people look like they RV all the time. I think the park owners need to incorporate in their rules a fine if you don't pick up after your pouch. As for people cutting through your campsite, maybe some yellow caution tape will do.

Thanks for listening and all the feedback. Keep them coming.
  • "He wasn't barking very loud"

That's what our neighbors told the campground host that I summoned when we were staying at a premium RV park.

I can appreciate how grandma, grandpa and solo dad were barely keeping up with the infant and toddler they'd brought along. But bringing the dog too and making it everyone else's problem was not appropriate. Luckily the dog (and us) were happier with it spending most of the weekend inside the trailer with it's people, rather than being tied up outside.

And I'm pretty good about offering up dog bags. We have a family member who works for one of the makers, so we buy in bulk. I even pick up after our dogs while hiking as their contribution to Nature isn't normal and can create issues for the other residents.

I have some current neighbors that have 4 young boys, maybe ages two to ten, and the kids run around like kids do. Unfortunately, they found my fiberglass canoe that I keep upside so it does no fill with rain water, as a nice jungle gym to climb all over. This put cracks in it a ruined it. Now a worthless canoe.

Trying to think of a nice way to bring it up to the neighbors for reimbursement.

    Any way, control your kids.

Just state the facts. Be direct. You don't have to be mean, nor do you have to be nice. Neutrality might work.
