Can fridge run on propane while you are towing 1500 miles?

Is it OK to leave the Propane fridge on while towing at high speeds on flat land and throgh moutains? We have had a 2 previous TTs over the past 6 years and upgraded to a Fiver last year (will never go back to a TT). We always shut off the power and closed the propane tanks before traveling (rarely traveled over 300 miles so everything stayed cold for the short drives). We are moving to Oregon and I will be traveling from the NE part of South Dakota through ND, MT, into Yellowstone National Park for a few days, back up to MT, WA, and finally OR allsaid and done about 1800 miles and 7 days. Are than any risks, problems, laws, etc. if I leave it on traveling? Will it stay lit? Thanks for any advice.

  • How is changing from a Travel Trailer to a 5th wheel and "upgrade"? Yes you can use your fridge on if you like.
  • We have never had an issue with leaving the fridge running on propane while traveling. We did turn the gas off when on ferries which is mandatory. Our old trailer fridge had to be lit manually from outside which was inconvenient, the new one is much more modern so we may leave it off on the road.

I tried to edit that to highway speeds and over (yes through was spelled wrong, too) but it would not let me.

I don't have a TT OR 5'er, but I always leave the propane on in my Class C when traveling, regardless of distance.
  • You'll probably be OK, but why not just keep doing what you had been doing, and just run it when you stop for lunch. Depending on how long you stay in any one place, 1800 miles over 7 days, is still just 257 miles/day. So, I don't see the problem.

I've seen to many of those RV fire videos.....better safe than sorry.
  • A few will say you're taking a risk there.

We've had no fires or other problems ever leaving the gas on while traveling.
This is just our experience to date YMMV.
