I guess if you are asking, then the conservative answer is wait until you put trailer brakes on your truck. That said, up to 3klb trailers don't even generally come with brakes from the factory and unless I was towing in terrain where the trailer brakes were necessary to keep from smoking the trucks brakes, I'd hook it and go.
