can I tow this 5th wheel?

I'm looking at a 2007 holiday rambler 28rld 5th wheel. It is listed to have a GVRW of 12,400lb. It's hitch weight listed as 2,050. It's dry weight is 8,545lb.

My truck is a 2009 Ford F250 Super Duty V8 5.4L. It has a max towing of 11,300lb and the yellow sticker inside the driver door says the combined weight of occupants and cargo should not exceed 2,509lbs.

As a side note, what do you guys think about a motorcycle carrying hitch mount on the back of the 5th wheel? Any words of advice are appreciated. I don't know how a 5th wheel effects payload. I was planning on doing a travel trailer but Camping World said they have welded motorcycle hitches on the back of 5th wheels before.

I told them I had to do my research and I'd get back to them.

Thanks. Dan.

PS sorry for any typos. I'm doing this on a mobile phone.

Why not look into a nice TT that your truck can handle and then carry the motorcycle in the bed of the truck using a Rampage lift or similar easy load device? You can easily tow a 30 foot or longer TT as the tongue weight is half of less than that of a similar sized fifth wheel.

You can't compare tongue weight hanging two feet off the back bumper to pin weight sitting over the rear axle. Apples to oranges.

And your not even factoring in all that weight (lift + motorcycle) your now adding to the bed of the truck. Your proposed setup would tow like******compared to that 5er.
  • Dually for a 9k lb dry 28ft fiver. Talk about overkill...

This isn't a toy hauler so unless he's loading it with lead bars it will be nowhere near GVWR. Truck will handle the load fine. Motor will be a struggle on any hills.

I tow a nearly exact same size/weight Toyhauler and even fully loaded tows beautifully with a 2012 2500HD.

As for the motorcycle on the back you need to check with the manufacturer if their frame is rated for the hitch/weight. Many are not.
  • Thanks guys. I'm going to turn down the deal tomorrow morning. That one was set camping world in Vacaville,CA. Going to check out done in Reno tomorrow since I'm staying at lake tahoe. Is there a brand of 5th wheel that would be lighter that I should keep an eye out for? ??
  • Those numbers sound high for a 28' but if accurate then NO you should not be pulling it with an F-250. Yes you can, it will hook up but it will get downright scary. Brakes, tires, suspension and the 5.4 will not be up to the task.

  • You would be pushing the limit on a F-250 with a fifth wheel. While attaching a motorcycle hitch to the back of the fifth wheel would subtract some weight, not taking it and you could be overweight on the truck due to the 'loaded' pin weight about 200 pounds more than the empty pin weight.

Yes you are within the 11,300 pound towing weight rating, as your 'loaded' trailer weight will be less than 10,000 pounds - most likely, except with the motorcycle on board will be near 11,000.

However do realize that Ford rated the truck to tow 11,300 pounds while only one driver is on board, so no passengers, they will have to come out of the 11,300 pound rating. So if the GCVWR is say 18,300 pounds and the truck is more than 7,000 with passengers (before hitching up) then the amount over the 7,000 must be subtracted from the 18,300 to get your overall total - still under 18,300 (or whatever is listed in the towing guide.)

How about clicking on 'Toy Hauler' forum, and looking at the toy haulers where you might find a RV that can haul the motorcycle safely, and be towed by the F-250. There are dozens of RV's out there. Most are listed on the toyhauler forum, so click on one of the top posts that says "Complete list of Toyhaulers"

    Good luck!

    Fred.
  • You do not have enough truck for that big a trailer. You will need to either get a smaller 5er or a 1 ton truck preferably with duals. As you sit now, you are over the limits of the truck. Sorry I cannot speak to the motorcycle part of your post.
