Sorry, I have no reference that I can cite, but I have had some experience dealing with stored water for laboratory use. If the water sits for a couple of weeks, I would drain and refill. Over a month or so, I would sanitize the system. (1/4 cup bleach for each 15 gallons of water and allow the solution to sit in the tank, lines and fixtures for 4 hours. Drain and refill.) I may be overly cautious but sanitizing is pretty easy and there is no reason to take any chances.
