New York has some odd rules. NYC has some odder ones. It's one of the reasons I no longer live in New York.
Handgun: would be a simple, no. Legally its a no.
Long gun: would also be a no since NY has Assault Rifle rules and those get really weird as to what is and is not an "assault rifle". To protect yourself the answer would have to be no.
In states like NY it's cleaner and easier to stay legal by going through a local deal to get what you want. If they are not willing to find it, sell it, to you there is probably a very good "legal" reason.
