Have a two year old Atwood Water heater. I am not right beside it so I can't get the model number. Currently I cannot get the pilot to stay lit so the heater will obviously not continue to heat. I started removing parts and checking for blockage as best I could; gas is coming out of the main box and thru the first tube. In a 'Hold My Beer" moment I had quite the pretty flame come out of the end of the tube. But it is not getting thru that last little connection that looks like two nuts with the actual pilot assemply on the other side. With the nuts off I can push a tie wrap thru to the end where the pilot flame would come out. But all assembled it will not put gas out of that end piece. Any ideas? Do I order and replace that part, or could pressure be a factor? Thanks.

When mine did that it was the thermocouple thingy.Tells the gas valve all is well.

Water Heater.As for the thermocouple, I could heat it up enough with the lighter to get the WH to turn on and run for a minute or so, then it would shut down because the thermocouple cooled back down. At least that is what I think.

It's the WH, and I have already done exactly what you suggested. Had all four burners going for a while. I even had flame coming out of the tube that runs right up to the pilot/thermocouple assembly. The Orifice fixed it. My son now has hot water in the RV. Thanks, all!

Thanks for the compliment! I like to think I am pretty handy, but two attempts to clean, one with carburetor cleaner and one with brake cleaner improved but did not fix. It's interesting though how the little flame I was able to get would allow me to start the WH, but then the pilot flame went out.

However I will not worry much about that. My son and I will do a RV Row run tomorrow looking for the part.

One thing I have learned is Chris B. is usually spot on. I didn't go to the exploded view but things like that are available.

Sorry guys, working slow on this project. We were able to do some cleaning on the Pilot Orifice and got it to where there was a small pilot burning, but not enough to keep the WH running. Today is a bad day for parts, so we will go find a new Orifice on Monday.

FYI, the orifice is Atwood p/n 91285.

If all else fails, a new pilot assembly is $35.00 at PPL. I assume you are pretty handy so cleaning will probably work. I don't know about today but in years past the aerosol cans of carb cleaner were great for dissolving or cleaning out things like the pilot orifice. Good luck.
