As you pointed out these sensors are super sensitive and will alarm with very little provation. I would suggest that it probably was your campfire smoke that caused the alarm. However I just replaced one in my TC that was only 2 years old. I've not only replaced the original but also installed a second battery operated unit as well. Better safe than sorry!
