Caulking around furnace vent?

Caulking around my furnace vent is cracking/shrinking, however it is still playable.
It also has black spots that look like mold. No other area on my 5er has these spots, or is cracking/shrinking.

What do I use to fix or replace? Do I need to completely remove the old caulking? It appears to be being different than the caulking anywhere else on my 5er.

  • Yeah, I don't think the temp gets high enough to warrant the HTRTV.
  • Thanks for the info. I thought about RTF, but don't want the red color. I'll get some Ptoflex and seal it back up.
  • Butyl tape is what should be used. *If* you want to go a step further, clean away any of the exposed tape & residue and put some Proflex caulk over the vent cover to wall joint.
  • Remove the old stuff and clean the area with minerals spirits. If you're worried about temperature, get some of this.

    Hi Temp RTV

    Only problem; it's red.
