We traveled cross country and never contacted another CBer. I don't think its worth it.
You have to use channel 17 on the west coast and channel 19 for the rest of the U.S. which is all the truckers on the road around you. The criticism is that truckers too many cuss words:) Truckers are like all the rest of the people in world, most are good people, a few are not ok, who can give you good road information, weather and accidents. There have been attempts to set Channel 13 for RVers but so far, no real interest has been established. I have never talked to an RVer on 13 in 20 yrs. :( I have always thought that Good Sam should take on the task of establishing Ch. 13 or any other channel as an RV channel.
