Actually, you can make calls from an iPad by loading a free phone app. We have it on one of our iPads and my daughter's iPod Touch. We use it from time to time, but wouldn't suggest tossing the cell service.
Very true that many consumers are getting raked over the coals on their cell plans. I cringe when I hear of people paying $200-$350/month. If they would change plans, they could take a cruise each year with the savings (or put it in the bank)!
