Did I miss the memo or something about safety chains? For 30 years, I have always crossed my safety chains to provide a basket for the tongue in the horrific event the coupler comes loose of the ball....
The chains only cradle the tongue if they are kept stretched tight during the breakaway. Almost never happens. Everything has to be perfect for it to happen.
The only way it can happen is if the trailer is dragging hard enough to keep the chains tight. Then the driver can't panic and stomp on the brakes; he has to bring the whole thing to a controlled stop. Yeah, right.
I guess the government feels that a slight chance is better than no chance.
