Well, I’m old enough to recall the gas rationing of the 70’s (due to OPEC), snd the long lines at the service stations (even and odd days, etc) and saw more than one uber heated argument (and WORSE!)…Are we to suppose that human nature has by now evolved enough to avert such hostile interpersonal behavior??

There was never a shortage. The tankers were lined up at sea to unload and price controls limited what the oil companies were willing to spend. All we had was domestic oil and that was not enough to go around at the time.
Ok, but without drifting into such root-cause arguments such as Rentier (ron-tee-AA) capitalism versus the historical anomaly (an Overton’s window event) of democratically devised Industrial Capitalism (ending serfdom, making possible private property ownership and the Industrial Revolution) - the 70’s OPEC crisis was just a earlier graphic example whereby the rationing of energy that restricted folks needs, wants and desires, sometimes triggered some awfully bad behavior… That was my only point (though admittedly an ardent fan of world history :) ..)
