Chattanooga RV Show

Spent the afternoon yesterday at the Chattanooga RV show. This as my first RV show and...wow...those shows are a bit overwhelming! From what I understand this was a small one compared to some RV shows in larger cities.

Few things I noticed, TT's and Fivers are a bargain! I mean I knew that, but when you can see them all side by side... Lined up row after row...it's really easy to see. $25-35k scores a very nice new Towable.

Seemed like the jump from towable to motorized was about 60k more...Even smaller Class C's were priced close to 80k new.

Class A gasser so were priced well over 100k... Literally more than my house... Pretty nice rigs though.

I tried to pay attention to quality and there were several brands made by Heartland that seemed to be missing some finishing touches, staples protruding from walls, peeling panels on the roof... Strange that the dealership would bring rigs to the show with obvious issues.

One suprise was the Airstreams.

Can't recall the model but it was around 85k and had aluminum panels on the inside walls of the trailer. The edges of these aluminum panels were very rough, sharp, and IMHO.. Not safe... Also, there were dividers in the coach, seemed to be paper accordion style dividers... I couldn't believe that a 90k coach would have el-cheapo accordion dividers... Heck, the 19k Zinger had pocket doors for dividers.

So, Airstream left a sour taste in my mouth... Heartland left a sour taste in my mouth.

I walked into a few of the high end Fivers... Wow.. Impressive....but way out of my price range.

found I really liked the Open Range brand of TT and Fivers... Really nice. Also found I really liked the Jayco trailers...seemed to be really good quality and the mattresses were very comfy.

Anyway, thanks for listening, first experience at an RV show, and it was a lot to take in.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

  • IMO, RV shows are for seeing all the options. Most of the attendees are just curious lookers to see what its all about. And they feel compelled to slam every door and poke every button. They have no intention of buying. Most dealers have literature with all the options listed. Whatever you do, don't buy the floor model. Its "been around".
I already owned my 'C' when I went to one at the local convention center. I was just looking for accessories that I might want to buy. Just not at the show. Everything was list price. I did buy one item. Coffee at the temporary Starbucks set up in the hallway. And that was a chore. I don't speak "Starbucks", so I just ordered a large black coffee. Best part of the show.
  • We bought our first TT at the Raleigh RV Show in 2004. We try to make it every year. The next show is this coming weekend and we'll surely be there.

I never get tired of them. Even if I'm not shopping a new camper, its fun to see what's new and check out all the other vendors like campgrounds and accessory shops.

But we ARE shopping a new camper so that makes it extra fun. :)
