Look at State Parks and beaches for inexpensive places. They don't all take trailers but the ones that do are a real bargain. Not a lot of amenities but great locations for the $.
We like Dockweiler State Beach and Paradise Campground up above Santa Barbara. Emma Wood State Beach is also awesome but a bit tricky to get in and out of, especially if you are new to trailers.
